Course Syllabus Senior Religion First Semester

Course Description:

Unit 1 World Religions and My Faith:   It’s human nature to pursue truth and to find answers to the big questions that plague our minds. Answers come to us in many forms through the world religions and other philosophical arguments. Our worldview lens impacts what we choose to believe as true. Jesus Christ claims to be “the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” Unlike all other world religions whose adherents work their way toward salvation of sorts, true Christianity is the only religion that offers salvation freely. The only thing you can do is to accept or reject this free gift. In this unit, students will explore the world religions, will take a look into Christianity and, in particular, the Seventh-day Adventist beliefs, and will articulate what they personally believe.

Unit 2 Ethics and Morality:  What anchors you to the things that are truly important in your life? When you stand at a crossroads and seek to look around the bend of two options, what makes you take one road over another? We make decisions every day. Some are small, although they may have wide-reaching effects, while others we know are significant and even urgent. At times we react from our guts and just know that something seems right or wrong. Other times we follow rules we have been taught in response to whether something is right or wrong. In other situations, we consider principles that can be applied across time and culture. And other times we make big decisions based on our personal convictions. Our responses to the big issues we may or may not ever face, personally (such as abortion, euthanasia, sexual ethics, genetic engineering, capital punishment, or simply how to treat the homeless), all stem from our personal code of ethics. The Bible shares many foundational principles when it comes to how to live our lives and make wise decisions. If we use it as our guide book, we can be assured that we will choose the best path in life for our daily decisions.

Course Syllabus Senior – Second Semester

Course Description:

Unit 3 - My Relationships:  The impact of a healthy spiritual relationship on those closest to us cannot be underestimated. The closer we are to God, the closer we grow to others who also abide in Him. This reality should help inform our friendship choices, especially as we choose a life partner. This unit explores aspects of healthy relationships such as personal identity, values, communication, anger management, conflict resolution, dating, marriage, and family dynamics. As students explore what healthy relationships look like, may they truly see that “the love of Christ controls and compels us” (2 Cor. 5:14) as we relate to each other on this earth.

Unit 4 - The Gospel of John:  The story of Jesus is the most incredible story of all time. We’ve chosen this story as the last one to revisit with your students before they leave school. This final unit will be a little different from the others. You will provide the context for the Gospel of John, but your students will lead each other through the encounters and conversations people had with Jesus in this Gospel. Together you will explore reasons to believe that Jesus is God’s true Son, the metaphors Jesus gave Himself, the unfathomable gift of His death on the cross, and what it all means to us today. The goal of this unit is for your students to leave high school transformed, with their eyes fixed on Jesus, the Living Water. May He quench the thirst of every student and your own, too.
